    Which Generation Should You Buy?

The first generation (2007–2013) is the cheapest way into a Qashqai. Later facelift cars from 2010 onwards have a better interior and proven engines, and are usually the best value on the forecourt. Check carefully for rust around the arches and sills, and for worn suspension.
The second generation (2014–2021) is a clear step up in refinement, economy and safety equipment. Cars from 2016 onwards are the sweet spot — by then the early production issues had been ironed out, and from 2018 the stronger 1.3 DIG-T petrol engine replaced the 1.2. read our full guide to which Qashqai years to avoid →

    Petrol or Diesel?

For most buyers, petrol. The 1.2 and 1.3 DIG-T engines suit school runs, town driving and the occasional longer trip, and they’re cheaper to insure and repair with no particulate filter to worry about.
The 1.5 and 1.6 dCi diesels are economical on a long run and make sense if you cover roughly 12,000 motorway miles a year or more. Below that, short journeys can clog the filter. If you drive into London regularly, a diesel needs to be Euro 6 to avoid the ULEZ charge — most petrol Qashqais already comply.

    What About the Automatic?

Nissan’s Xtronic CVT automatic is smooth and easy in traffic, but it needs its transmission fluid changed at the recommended intervals and plenty of owners skip it. On any automatic you’re viewing, check it pulls away cleanly without hesitation and doesn’t whine under acceleration. We’ll tell you what we know about a car’s service record.

    What We Check Before Listing

    • Service history and MOT record, including advisories
    • Cold start — listening for timing chain noise on early 1.2 DIG-T engines
    • Suspension, for knocks over bumps
    • Panoramic roof drainage and headlining, where fitted
    • Electrics — reversing camera, parking sensors, air conditioning
    • Tyres, brakes and overall condition

Every used Nissan Qashqai in Reading that we list goes through these checks. You can also look up any car’s past MOT results on the GOV.UK MOT history checker.

    Frequently Asked Questions

It has a solid record, particularly second-generation cars from 2016 onwards. As with any used car, how it has been maintained matters far more than the badge — look for consistent service history and a clean MOT record.

The earliest first-generation cars and the very early second-generation examples need the closest inspection. Our guide to Qashqai years to avoid covers each generation in detail.

There’s no fixed limit. A well-documented 120,000-mile Qashqai is often a better buy than a 60,000-mile car with patchy history. Motorway miles are gentler than years of short cold-start trips.

Petrol suits most buyers. Diesel only makes financial sense above roughly 12,000 motorway miles a year, as short journeys can clog the particulate filter.

Most petrol Qashqais from 2006 onwards comply. Diesels need to be Euro 6, generally meaning late 2015 onwards. Check the specific vehicle rather than assuming by year.

Usually, yes. Earlier examples regularly come in under £5,000 — see our used cars under £5,000 for what’s available now.
