Used SUVs in Reading – In Stock Now
Family SUVs
If you need space for passengers, car seats and a boot that swallows a buggy, this is the size to look at. The Nissan Qashqai is the one we stock most — adults fit comfortably in the back, the boot is genuinely useful, and running costs stay closer to a hatchback than you’d expect. The Ford Kuga is another good option when it comes in, with a slightly bigger feel on the road.
Compact SUVs
If you mostly drive around town, park on the street, or simply want a raised driving position without a bigger car, a compact crossover makes more sense. The Nissan Juke and Vauxhall Mokka both sit close to supermini size underneath, so they’re easy to park and cheap to run — but rear legroom and boot space are tighter than a Qashqai.
Are SUVs Expensive to Run?
Not as much as people assume. A modern small SUV with a 1.2 or 1.3 petrol engine returns economy close to a hatchback, and insurance groups are often similar. The bigger differences come from tyre sizes and, on some models, four-wheel drive — most of the SUVs we sell are two-wheel drive, which keeps costs down.
Petrol or Diesel?
For most people buying used SUVs in Reading, petrol is the safer choice. Diesel only makes financial sense if you cover serious motorway mileage — roughly 12,000 miles a year or more. Below that, short journeys can clog the diesel particulate filter, which is an expensive problem to put right. If you drive into London, check the car is Euro 6 for ULEZ.
What We Check Before Listing
Every one of our used SUVs in Reading goes through the same inspection: service history, MOT record and advisories, suspension and brakes, tyres, and a cold start. Where a car has a panoramic roof, we check for water ingress. If something needs attention, we deal with it or tell you about it.
You can also look up any car’s past MOT results yourself on the GOV.UK MOT history checker before you visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Nissan Qashqai is the one we recommend most often — proper rear legroom, a large boot and sensible running costs. The Ford Kuga is a good alternative if you want something slightly larger.
In practice, very little. Most cars sold as SUVs today — including the Qashqai and Juke — are crossovers: built on car platforms, usually two-wheel drive, with a raised driving position rather than genuine off-road ability.
Not necessarily. Small crossovers with modest engines often sit in similar insurance groups to hatchbacks. Always get a quote on the specific car before you buy.
Yes, usually. Earlier Qashqai, Juke and Mokka examples regularly come in under £5,000. Browse our used cars under £5,000 to see what’s available now.
